Before you download
Saylo currently requires an Apple Silicon Mac with an M-series chip and macOS 14 or later. Choose Apple menu → About This Mac to check your chip and macOS version. There is no Intel, Windows, or iPhone release of Saylo at present.
The current beta is free and uncapped. Planned after-beta pricing does not start a subscription or charge you today.
The beta uses a local signing certificate and is not Apple-notarized. macOS may block it from opening. If you need help, contact support or wait for a notarized release; keep your Mac’s security protections enabled.
Give Saylo a home
- Download the current beta and open its DMG file.
- Drag Saylo onto the Applications folder shown in the installer. When replacing an older copy, quit Saylo first and choose Replace.
- Open Saylo from Applications. Running the copy inside the disk image can leave you using an older build later.
- Let the speech model finish preparing. The first download needs internet; recognition can then work offline.
Three permissions, with a purpose
| Permission | What it enables |
|---|---|
| Microphone | Captures speech while you dictate. |
| Input Monitoring | Detects your chosen key. It also lets terminal delivery notice other input and stop safely; key contents are not recorded. |
| Accessibility | Checks the focused field, inserts text, and supports local correction learning in compatible editors. |
Use Saylo’s setup guide to open the relevant part of System Settings. After allowing a permission, return to Saylo and use its permission recheck. If a switch looks enabled but Saylo still cannot use it, quit and reopen the Applications copy, then check again.
Permission behavior can depend on which signed copy of the app you opened. Avoid keeping an older build running beside the new one.
Choose a key you actually have
The default is F19, a key found on some extended keyboards. On a MacBook, open Saylo’s Settings and choose an available key such as Right Option. Pick a key that does not conflict with your usual shortcuts.
- Hold to talk: keep your key pressed while speaking, then release it for the final result.
- Hands-free: double-tap your key to keep recording; press it again when you are done.
Test first in a simple note with a short, non-private sentence. Wait until the speech model is ready before starting.
When a field does not receive text
Live text depends on the receiving app’s text-field support. Changing the cursor, editing a draft, or switching apps can stop replacement so Saylo preserves your work. Apple Terminal uses a separate append-only path; Saylo does not erase terminal text or press Return for you.
Use Copy or Paste on the result card if needed. The card fades after four seconds and pauses while you hover. Click the screen-edge island, or choose Recent Dictations from the menu bar, to recover the latest 10 non-secure results. This history clears when Saylo quits.
Include your Saylo version/build, macOS version, chosen key, and the app that received the text. Export Diagnostics from Settings and review the file before sharing it. Use a short sample without private details.
