Try the controls you already have
Apple Dictation is built into macOS and is configured in System Settings → Keyboard. Apple documents a microphone key or keyboard shortcut, punctuation controls, and continued typing during dictation on Apple Silicon. See the Mac Dictation guide.
Saylo requires a separate installation and its own permissions. It currently runs on M-series Macs with macOS 14 or later. If the built-in workflow already handles your writing comfortably, you may not need another app.
The practical differences
| Consideration | Saylo beta | Apple Dictation |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Install the beta, allow permissions, and prepare its model. | Use the Dictation controls in macOS. |
| Session control | Hold a selected key, or double-tap for hands-free recording. | Use the shortcut and start/stop behavior described by Apple. |
| Recognition | Local model on the supported Mac after download. | Check the processing information shown for your Mac and selected language. |
| Recovery | Copy/Paste card and the latest 10 non-secure results in memory. | Review and correct the text entered in the receiving app. |
Apple’s available languages and on-device behavior depend on the selected configuration. Do not assume built-in Dictation always sends speech to a server; read the privacy information in your Mac’s Dictation settings.
Which workflow is worth testing?
Start with Apple Dictation if you want the built-in option and its system controls already suit you. Check your chosen language and punctuation behavior in the applications you use.
Try Saylo if you want hold-to-talk control, a dedicated menu-bar app, local correction mappings, and a short-lived recovery history. It is still a beta, so the local-certificate opening restrictions and text-field compatibility matter.
We have not published a head-to-head accuracy or speed benchmark. Local processing alone does not establish which recognizer will handle your voice better.
A fair ten-minute test
- Use the same microphone and a quiet environment.
- Dictate a brief message with a name, a number, and one word you often correct.
- Repeat in a longer note and the exact chat editor you normally use.
- Check punctuation, deliberate edits, and recovery after a missed insertion.
Use only one dictation shortcut at a time to avoid triggering two tools together. Review Saylo’s key and permission setup before testing.
Comparison by Saylo’s developer. Apple facts checked October 26, 2026 from the official Mac User Guide. Features can change with macOS and language. No Apple endorsement is implied.
